Monday March 24,
2009 Cubs vs. Colorado
Rockies WON 9-8 We were fortunate enough to scoop up tickets to four Cubs spring training games and we came away with a 2-2 record winning the bookend games but loosing the two middle games. There's not a bad seat in the house at HoHoKam Park which is 13-years old and has a capacity of roughly 14,000. It's an easy park to get into; parking is plentiful and reasonable at $5 per car or $10 per RV. Getting out after a game is another story but that's to be expected as anytime you have 6000-7000 vehicles leaving any venue at the same time it's gonna be a slow go. As I said there are no bad seats at this park. We were in the right and left field bleachers for the first two games and in the first base upper boxes for game three. We purchased those tickets on line before we left home. When we arrived in Mesa we were able to get tickets to the last spring training game for the season on April 2nd and those seats were 6 or 7 rows behind the Cubs' dugout. Those were really good seats. The food at HoHoKam park is much like the food at any other ballpark...hot dogs, burgers, pizza and the like. 1/4-pound dogs were $5.50, a tall lemonade was $5.50, beer ranged between $5-$6.50. Ice cream consisted of a small container of bite-sized ice cream pieces for $5. On the plus side the fries were great! Lots of beer and lemonade vendors were roaming the stands but if you wanted a hot dog you had to go fetch it yourself. It was wonderful just being at the ball park and watching my team play. There were great plays and bonehead plays but it was all good. Soriano is still not hitting like he should and neither is Fukodome. I'm pretty high on rookie Micah Hoffpauir and it looks like he's going to make the opening day squad. That means the team will be carrying six outfielders so his spot may not last long, especially if he doesn't produce when called upon. But I think he has the right attitude towards the game. It was a little sad leaving the park at the end of the game but opening day is Monday, April 7th and the 2010 spring training season is 11-months away. I hope we'll be back.
